Even though this law has been approved in Georgia since 2006, many people may not be aware of the benefits of Direct Access. The purpose of today’s post is to tell you a little bit more on this topic and help you understand your options better.

What is Direct Access?

Direct Access allows patients to go directly to a physical therapists for treatment, without having to wait for a referral from their physician.

Georgia was the 41st state to pass ‘direct access’ legislation (HB 801) in April 2006, opening the doors for consumers to have more control of their healthcare needs.

So what does this really mean?

It means that you can get evaluated and treated by a physical therapist sooner, which may result in better outcomes, lower costs, and less frustration about your recovery time. No doctor’s referral needed.

Many managed care and insurance companies don’t have requirements for a referral for physical therapy because they now recognize the cost savings and improved access to care. Don’t assume that there is a referral requirement, but instead check your contract or payer policy to be sure. Also verify what your insurance company covers before you pay out of pocket.

What is included in Direct Access in Georgia?

Physical therapy services for fitness, wellness and prevention not related to the treatment of an injury or ailment.

Return within 60 days of discharge of physical therapy for previously diagnosed and received treatment/services for problems related to an initial referral for therapy.

Note: In case of an injury or illness we can do an assessment and give advice accordingly.

What is required of your physical therapist?

Physical therapists are licensed professionals, accredited by physical therapy programs at university level, who have at least two years of practical experience.

They are trained in examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of clients with functional limitations, impairments or disabilities.

If there is no reasonable progress within a specific amount of time, the therapist will refer you to a physician or appropriate specialist.

Like many other professionals, physical therapists are required to take continuing education classes to keep up with changes and developments in the healthcare world.
Last Saturday I attended another workshop on taping techniques for common sports injuries, using Rocktape.

Rocktape helps to support weak muscles and swollen joints, inhibiting or facilitating muscles, while also assisting the blood circulation. The tape and taping technique helps speed the healing process, but is used to prevent injuries and enhance performance as well.

The workshop was held at the Hilton Garden Hill Hotel in Atlanta and was presented by sports medicine specialist Dr. Rick Daigle, PT DPT.
The audience included physical and occupational therapists and athletic trainers.

We had the opportunity to practice applying the tape on peers and ourselves to get both perspectives.
One of the advantages of Rocktape is that it’s easy to apply, even though good knowledge of anatomy is required to maximize the effects.
One application lasts up to five days and when it gets wet, the tape dries quickly. It is also easy to remove.

This course provides a renewed opportunity to make orthopedic surgeons and urgent care centers aware of the importance of quick action to help stabilize injured muscles and joints. The material and techniques I acquired at the workshop will enable me to better assist our clients with these injuries.

Call us at 770-578-4343 if you have any questions about taping and how it can help you.

We’re a week into the New Year and Remobility & Staff would like to wish all their client’s, friends and family, a Happy and above all, a Healthy New Year!

If you are like most people, one of your goals for the new year may be to get back in shape, improve your endurance, or exercise more. Just remember to take it easy after the holidays, especially if you haven’t done much exercising since Thanksgiving.

Here are a few tips to help you prevent those pesky injuries people may get when starting their exercise routine after a period of inactivity.

Warm up before exercising. Ease into your workout by slowly stretching those muscles you want to target during your workout.

Pay attention to your body signals. Feeling pain is a message from your body, trying to tell you not to push too hard.

Keep your exercise routine within your capabilities. Unless you’re an athlete, there is no need to rush into a more challenging or faster routine. If you’re not sure which exercises are appropriate, ask for advice or get a professional guide or trainer.

Drink plenty of water. Be sure to hydrate your body throughout the day in preparation of your workout, but also drink enough during your exercise routine.

Last week, Roel gave a seminar on falls and fall prevention, to teach the community about the dangers of falls. It had a great turn out and everyone learned a lot of useful information on how to improve their balance and ways to prevent falls.

Roel interacted with the audience and had an open discussion to answer all their questions. Throughout his presentation, he actively used props to show how to use a certain piece of equipment, or he explained how falling affects each part of the body. Overall, it was a very informative and nice presentation.

Since this week will be my last week here, I would like to share some of my thoughts about Remobility. I enjoyed my time at Remobility because it has helped me understand how the medical field works. Roel and Cathy were very friendly and helpful. I liked the calm and pleasant atmosphere Roel creates for the patients here and he is a great physical therapist!

Since Roel is teaching a class on fall prevention this week I felt it would be a good time to write about falls.

Falls are a prevalent and dangerous problem that affects seniors above the age of 65. Physical therapy can help prevent falls with individualized treatment plans.

Here at Remobility, we use a test called the Bergman’s Balance Test. This test measures your abilities to perform certain tasks to assess your level of balance. The results of this test help us to design a program of exercises and activities just for you, with an emphasis on strength and flexibility. Remember, physical therapists have many ways of working with you to enhance your balance!

We at Remobility feel obligated to teach the public about fall prevention. Because falling is so common and potentially serious, it is important to find out what you can do to decrease your risk and improve your mobility.

You can attend our seminars November 11, 2011 from 10-11 a.m. and 11-12 p.m. where Roel has put together a presentation on fall prevention.
