We’re a week into the New Year and Remobility & Staff would like to wish all their client’s, friends and family, a Happy and above all, a Healthy New Year!

If you are like most people, one of your goals for the new year may be to get back in shape, improve your endurance, or exercise more. Just remember to take it easy after the holidays, especially if you haven’t done much exercising since Thanksgiving.

Here are a few tips to help you prevent those pesky injuries people may get when starting their exercise routine after a period of inactivity.

Warm up before exercising. Ease into your workout by slowly stretching those muscles you want to target during your workout.

Pay attention to your body signals. Feeling pain is a message from your body, trying to tell you not to push too hard.

Keep your exercise routine within your capabilities. Unless you’re an athlete, there is no need to rush into a more challenging or faster routine. If you’re not sure which exercises are appropriate, ask for advice or get a professional guide or trainer.

Drink plenty of water. Be sure to hydrate your body throughout the day in preparation of your workout, but also drink enough during your exercise routine.

Give your body a break. While it’s great for your body to get the exercise, it is also wise to take a break in between to recover and get ready for the next round.

Follow these tips to prevent getting injuries that will only delay your goals for a healthier you.

Remember: Prevention is the key!

Last week, Roel gave a seminar on falls and fall prevention, to teach the community about the dangers of falls. It had a great turn out and everyone learned a lot of useful information on how to improve their balance and ways to prevent falls.

Roel interacted with the audience and had an open discussion to answer all their questions. Throughout his presentation, he actively used props to show how to use a certain piece of equipment, or he explained how falling affects each part of the body. Overall, it was a very informative and nice presentation.

Since this week will be my last week here, I would like to share some of my thoughts about Remobility. I enjoyed my time at Remobility because it has helped me understand how the medical field works. Roel and Cathy were very friendly and helpful. I liked the calm and pleasant atmosphere Roel creates for the patients here and he is a great physical therapist!

Since Roel is teaching a class on fall prevention this week I felt it would be a good time to write about falls.

Falls are a prevalent and dangerous problem that affects seniors above the age of 65. Physical therapy can help prevent falls with individualized treatment plans.

Here at Remobility, we use a test called the Bergman’s Balance Test. This test measures your abilities to perform certain tasks to assess your level of balance. The results of this test help us to design a program of exercises and activities just for you, with an emphasis on strength and flexibility. Remember, physical therapists have many ways of working with you to enhance your balance!

We at Remobility feel obligated to teach the public about fall prevention. Because falling is so common and potentially serious, it is important to find out what you can do to decrease your risk and improve your mobility.

You can attend our seminars November 11, 2011 from 10-11 a.m. and 11-12 p.m. where Roel has put together a presentation on fall prevention.

I have recently read articles on strokes, which is an interesting topic I would like to tell you about.

A stroke is when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, which results in a loss of brain function. It is also a leading cause of long term disability.

Here at Remobility I have seen Roel work with stroke patients and he has four factors that he accounts for when treating a stroke patient: behavior modification, family involvement, medical instruction, and physical therapy.

Behavior modification means having the patient change his behavior in order to adapt to his new conditions and in order to stay calm. If the patient gets too angry or frustrated then their blood pressure may rise, which may lead to further complications, so the patient must learn to stay calm at all times.

Family involvement and encouragement is also an important factor since patients can’t do much on their own. Family members must encourage positive behavior of the patient and avoid making the patient stress out. Some strokes cause the patient to have speech difficulties, so it is important to give the patient a chance to speak if they are trying to say something. Families also need to encourage home safety by keeping into account such things as proximity from the bed to the bathroom and moving items that can pose a falling hazard.

The next factor is medical instruction, which is anything that the doctor gives the patient or tells them to do. This usually includes medicine that the doctor prescribes, changing your diet, and watching your weight. There are certain foods to avoid that can trigger a stroke, such as pastries, red meat, and processed meats. Watching your weight is also an important factor that needs to be accounted for to avoid another stroke.

The final factor is the one that you come to Remobility for, physical therapy. Early treatment with physical therapy is vital in order for the patient to recover, so remember to start therapy ASAP! Physical therapy plays a major role in the recovery of the patient because it is used to regain basic skills and help increase other functions.

These four factors coincide with each other in order to help patients regain their previous abilities and have positive improvements!

Hello, my name is Neilay Patel and I am a student intern from Wheeler high School. I am interning here as part of Wheeler Magnet Program’s “Senior Experience” where I get to intern for someone in a profession that interests me.

Physical therapy was a field that I was interested in, so I was very happy to learn that I would be able to intern for Roel Fung-A-Wing at Remobility Physical Therapy and Wellness Services. I have only been here for a few days, but I have already learned so much about physical therapy and what therapists must do. I have had a great time interning here so far because Roel has been a great teacher who understands this field and lives life with integrity.

Every day I have read something new about physical therapy and I am gaining more interest in the field. Every time I have a question, I can approach Roel and he will always have a great answer that will help me understand more about physical therapy and how to live an honest life. I will be adding updates throughout the next few weeks as I learn more about physical therapy.

With winter comes ice, and with ice come falls and injuries. Here are some tips for walking safely on ice to avoid these falls:

Wear shoes with ice traction slip-ons or metal cleats

Walk with feet slightly apart and knees slightly bent to provide stability

Use small, shuffling steps and hold your arms out for balance if necessary

Walk sideways when going downhill to avoid the “skiing effect”

If carrying items, be sure to distribute weight evenly

Try using grassy or landscaped areas, which are typically less icy than sidewalks

If you would like a demonstration of these techniques or if you need help with an injury resulting from a fall, please call us at 770-578-4343. Have a safe and healthy winter season!

At the age of twelve, Susan decided to become a physical therapist while shadowing the therapist working with her two-year-old cousin, who was injured in an automobile accident. Her cousin recoved from the traumatic experience in good health, and as a result, Susan gained a love for pediatric rehab. Susan plans to specialize in pediatric physical therapy and hopes to eventually work for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
